Omaha Hi-Low: Fundamental Overview

Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is often times seen as one of the most difficult but well-loved poker variations. It’s a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites play from all levels of players. This is the primary reason why a once obscure variation, has expanded in popularity so amazingly.
Omaha/8 begins exactly like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are given out to each player. A round of wagering ensues in which players can wager, check, or drop out. Three cards are dealt out, this is called the flop. Another round of wagering happens. After all the players have either called or folded, a further card is revealed on the turn. Another sequence of wagering ensues at which point the river card is revealed. The gamblers must attempt to make the best high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is where a number of entrants often get confused. Contrasted to Holdem, where the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi/lo the player has to utilize precisely three cards from the board, and precisely 2 hole cards. Not a single card more, no less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot can be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."
A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It is the best possible hand out of every player’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house. It is the very same concept in nearly every poker game.
The low hand is more complicated, but certainly opens up the play. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that can be made, with the worst being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and lower. The low hand takes half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there is no low hand presented, the higher hand takes the entire pot.
