Omaha Hi/Low: Fundamental Summary

Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is frequently viewed as one of the most complicated but well-loved poker games. It is a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites play from every level of players. This is the chief reason why a once obscure game, has expanded in acceptance so rapidly.
Omaha hi/lo starts exactly like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are given out to each player. A round of betting follows in which players can wager, check, or fold. Three cards are given out, this is known as the flop. A further round of betting ensues. After all the players have either called or dropped out, a further card is flipped on the turn. Another round of wagering ensues and then the river card is flipped. The entrants must attempt to put together the strongest high and low five card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is where a few entrants get flustered. Unlike Texas Hold ‘Em, in which the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi/lo the player must use exactly three cards on the board, and exactly two hole cards. Not a single card more, no less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot might be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is just how it sounds. It is the strongest possible hand out of everyone’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the same approach in nearly every poker game.
A low hand is more difficult, but certainly free’s up the action. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. A low hand is the worst hand that might be put together, with the lowest being A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and smaller. The low hand wins half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there is no lower hand presented, the high hand takes the whole pot.
It may seem complex at first, following a couple of rounds you will be able to get the basic nuances of the game with ease. Seeing as you have individuals wagering for the low and betting for the high, and seeing as so many cards are in play, Omaha hi lo offers an overwhelming range of betting choices and owing to the fact that you have several individuals shooting for the high hand, and several shooting for the low hand. If you like a game with a plethora of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to compete in Omaha 8 or better.
