Omaha Hi-Lo: General Outline

Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is commonly viewed as one of the most complicated but popular poker games. It is a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for action from all levels of players. This is the primary reason why a once obscure variation, has increased in popularity so rapidly.
Omaha 8 or better begins exactly like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are dealt to each player. A round of betting ensues where gamblers can bet, check, or drop out. Three cards are dealt out, this is known as the flop. Another sequence of betting ensues. After all the gamblers have in turn called or dropped out, an additional card is flipped on the turn. an additional sequence of betting follows and then the river card is revealed. The gamblers will have to make the best high and low five card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is where a few players often get flustered. Contrasted to Holdem, where the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi/lo the player must utilize precisely three cards from the board, and precisely two hole cards. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot could be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."
A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It is the best hand out of every player’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the very same notion in just about every poker game.
A low hand is more complicated, but really opens up the play. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the worst hand that can be put together, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and below. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there is no low hand available, the high hand wins the complete pot.
It may seem complex at the start, following a couple of hands you will be able to pick up on the basic subtleties of the game easily enough. Seeing as you have people betting for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are in play, Omaha 8 or better provides an exciting assortment of wagering options and because you have several players trying for the high hand, and a few battling for the low hand. If you enjoy a game with a plethora of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to participate in Omaha/8.
