Omaha Hi/Lo: Basic Summary

Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is often times seen as one of the most complicated but well-loved poker variations. It is a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for action from all levels of players. This is the main reason why a once obscure variation, has expanded in popularity so amazingly.
Omaha 8 or better begins just like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are handed out to every player. A round of betting follows where gamblers can bet, check, or fold. Three cards are dealt out, this is known as the flop. A further round of wagering happens. After all the players have in turn called or dropped out, another card is revealed on the turn. a further round of wagering ensues at which point the river card is flipped. The entrants must attempt to put together the best high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is where many players get confused. Unlike Texas Holdem, where the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi lo the player has to utilize exactly 3 cards from the board, and exactly two hole cards. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot can be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is just how it sounds. It’s the strongest hand out of every player’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the same notion in nearly every poker game.
A low hand is more difficult, but really opens up the action. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that could be made, with the lowest value being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and smaller. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there is no low hand presented, the higher hand wins the entire pot.
Although it seems difficult at first, following a couple of rounds you will be able to pick up on the basic nuances of play with ease. Seeing as you have individuals wagering for the low and betting for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are being used at once, Omaha 8 or better offers an exciting assortment of wagering possibilities and seeing that you have numerous players battling for the high, as well as several trying for the low hand. If you prefer a game with a plethora of outs and actions, it’s not a waste of your time to play Omaha hi/lo.
