Omaha Hi-Lo: Basic Summary

Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is commonly seen as one of the most complex but favored poker variations. It is a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites action from every level of players. This is the main reason why a once obscure game, has grown in acceptance so rapidly.
Omaha 8 or better starts like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are dealt to each player. A round of betting ensues where players can wager, check, or drop out. 3 cards are handed out, this is known as the flop. Another round of wagering ensues. Once all the players have in turn called or folded, a further card is revealed on the turn. an additional sequence of betting follows at which point the river card is revealed. The players will need to put together the strongest high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is the point where some players can get flustered. Unlike Holdem, where the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha Hi-Lo the player must use exactly three cards on the board, and precisely 2 hole cards. No more, no less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot could be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It’s the strongest hand out of every player’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the very same notion in nearly every poker game.
The low hand is more complex, but really opens up the play. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. A low hand is the worst hand that could be put together, with the lowest being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and smaller. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there’s no low hand available, the high hand wins the whole pot.
It may seem complex at the start, after a couple of rounds you will be able to get the base nuances of play with ease. Seeing as you have individuals wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and since so many cards are being used at once, Omaha Hi-Lo provides an exciting array of wagering choices and seeing that you have several players shooting for the high hand, along with several shooting for the low. If you prefer a game with a lot of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to play Omaha Hi-Lo.
