Omaha Hi/Lo: General Summary

Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is often times seen as one of the most difficult but well-loved poker variations. It’s a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for play from every level of players. This is the chief reason why a once obscure variation, has grown in popularity so amazingly.
Omaha/8 starts just like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are given out to each player. A round of wagering ensues where gamblers can bet, check, or fold. Three cards are dealt out, this is called the flop. One more round of betting ensues. Once all the players have in turn called or dropped out, an additional card is revealed on the turn. an additional round of betting happens and then the river card is flipped. The entrants must attempt to make the strongest high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is where a number of entrants can get flustered. Unlike Texas Holdem, where the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha hi lo the player must utilize exactly 3 cards from the board, and precisely two cards from their hand. Not a single card more, no less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot might be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."
A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It is the best possible hand out of everyone’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the same concept in almost every poker game.
A lower hand is more complicated, but certainly free’s up the action. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. A low hand is the weakest hand that could be made, with the worst being A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and below. The low hand wins half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there’s no lower hand available, the high hand takes the entire pot.
It may seem complex initially, after a few rounds you will be agile enough to get the fundamental nuances of the game easily enough. Since you have individuals betting for the low and betting for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are being used at the same time, Omaha High-Low provides an amazing array of wagering options and seeing that you have numerous individuals trying for the high hand, along with a few battling for the low hand. If you prefer a game with a considerable amount of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to compete in Omaha/8.
