Omaha Hi Low: Basic Summary

Saturday, April 26th, 2025

Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is frequently viewed as one of the most difficult but well-loved poker games. It is a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for play from every level of players. This is the main reason why a once irrelevant game, has increased in popularity so rapidly.

Omaha/8 starts just like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are given out to every player. A sequence of wagering ensues where players can bet, check, or drop out. 3 cards are dealt out, this is called the flop. One more round of wagering happens. After all the gamblers have either called or dropped out, an additional card is revealed on the turn. a further round of wagering follows and then the river card is flipped. The entrants will need to put together the best high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is where some players can get baffled. Contrasted to Holdem, in which the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha Hi-Lo the player must use exactly 3 cards on the board, and exactly two cards from their hand. Not a single card more, no less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot might be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It’s the strongest possible hand out of every player’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the same notion in almost all poker games.

The low hand is more difficult, but certainly opens up the play. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that could be put together, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and below. The low hand wins half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there is no low hand available, the high hand takes the whole pot.

While it seems difficult at the start, after a few hands you will be able to pick up on the fundamental nuances of play simply enough. Seeing as you have players wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and since so many cards are in play, Omaha 8 or better provides an overwhelming collection of betting options and seeing that you have many players battling for the high, and many trying for the low hand. If you like a game with a considerable amount of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to play Omaha/8.
