Omaha Hi/Low: Basic Outline

Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is commonly seen as one of the most complex but popular poker games. It is a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for play from all levels of players. This is the primary reason why a once invisible game, has expanded in acceptance so rapidly.
Omaha hi lo starts like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are dealt to each player. A round of wagering follows where players can wager, check, or drop out. Three cards are handed out, this is called the flop. Another sequence of betting happens. After all the gamblers have either called or dropped out, an additional card is flipped on the turn. Another round of wagering follows at which point the river card is revealed. The players will need to make the strongest high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is where many entrants get confused. Unlike Texas Holdem, where the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi/lo the player has to use exactly 3 cards on the board, and precisely two hole cards. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot may be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is just what it sounds like. It is the best possible hand out of everyone’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the same approach in just about all poker games.
A low hand is more difficult, but certainly opens up the play. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that can be made, with the worst being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and lower. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there is no low hand available, the higher hand wins the complete pot.
Although it seems complex initially, following a few hands you will be agile enough to get the base nuances of play with ease. Seeing as you have players betting for the low and wagering for the high, and since so many cards are being used at the same time, Omaha hi-low provides an exciting collection of betting choices and seeing that you have several players trying for the high, as well as several shooting for the low.
