Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is often times viewed as one of the most complex but favored poker games. It is a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for action from all levels of players. This is the chief reason why a once obscure variation, has expanded in acceptance so amazingly.
Omaha Hi-Lo begins like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are dealt to each player. A sequence of betting follows in which players can bet, check, or fold. Three cards are given out, this is referred to as the flop. One more round of wagering ensues. After all the players have in turn called or folded, a further card is revealed on the turn. a further round of betting follows at which point the river card is revealed. The entrants must attempt to put together the strongest high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is where a few players often get confused. Contrasted to Holdem, where the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi lo the player must utilize exactly 3 cards on the board, and precisely two hole cards. No more, not a single card less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot could be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."
A high hand is just how it sounds. It’s the best hand out of every player’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the same concept in just about all poker games.
A low hand is more complex, but certainly free’s up the action. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. A low hand is the worst hand that can be put together, with the lowest value being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and below. The low hand wins half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there is no lower hand available, the higher hand wins the complete pot.
It may seem complex at the outset, after a few rounds you will be agile enough to pick up on the basic nuances of the game with ease. Seeing as you have individuals betting for the low and betting for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are in play, Omaha hi lo provides an amazing array of betting possibilities and because you have several individuals shooting for the high hand, along with many battling for the low hand.
